Parent Fellowship – A pilot study at Madhavaram, Chennai

  1. Ouvai Foundation launched the Parent Fellowship Programme to empower parents as partners in their children’s educational journey. Recognizing the meaningful and sustained improvements in children’s learning require active support beyond the classroom. Rooted in the belief that parents are a child’s first and most influential educators, the programme was designed to strengthen parental engagement and foster a culture of learning within homes and communities.
  2. The Parent Fellowship Programme focused on enhancing parents’ understanding of foundational literacy and numeracy while equipping them with practical tools and strategies to support their children’s learning. Through structured fellowship sessions, interactive workshops, and guided activities, parents were introduced to simple yet effective approaches for promoting reading, numeracy and critical thinking at home using locally available and low-cost resources.
  3. A key objective of the programme was to transform parents from passive observers into active contributors to their children’s educational success. Participants were encouraged to establish regular learning routines at home, engage in meaningful conversations with their children about school, monitor learning progress and create nurturing environments that inspire curiosity and confidence.
  4. Beyond home-based learning support, the fellowship strengthened parents’ awareness of their role within the broader education ecosystem. Parents were encouraged to engage constructively with teachers, participate in school-related discussions, and advocate for quality education and equitable learning opportunities for all children. The programme also created platforms for parents to share experiences, learn from one another and collectively address challenges affecting children’s education.
  5. By fostering stronger connections between homes, schools and communities, the Parent Fellowship Programme has contributed to building a supportive ecosystem where learning becomes a shared responsibility. The initiative not only enhanced parental confidence and involvement but also laid the foundation for sustained community ownership of children’s educational outcomes. Through this innovative approach, Ouvai Foundation continues to demonstrate that empowered parents are powerful catalysts for lasting educational transformation.
