A child’s education is not shaped by schools alone. The foundation of learning begins at home; through conversations, encouragement, support, and the everyday involvement of parents in a child’s life. With this belief, Ouvai Foundation initiated the Parent Fellowship Program in Madhavaram to help parents become more aware, confident and actively involved in their children’s learning journey.
The main objective of the fellowship is to help parents understand that education is not solely the responsibility of teachers or schools. Parents play an equally important role in shaping their children’s learning habits, confidence, communication and future aspirations. Through the program, parents were encouraged to use simple resources available at home to support foundational learning in Tamil, English and Mathematics.
As part of the FLN (Foundational Literacy and Numeracy) intervention, fellowship sessions introduced parents to practical and easy-to-use learning methods such as storytelling, reading activities, number games, word-building exercises and interactive conversations that could be practiced within their daily routines. The program emphasized that meaningful learning can happen even through small everyday interactions at home.
The fellowship also focused on creating awareness among parents about the importance of quality education and learning outcomes. Parents were encouraged to regularly engage with schools, understand their children’s academic progress and actively ask questions about classroom learning and teaching quality. The initiative aimed to build confidence among parents to voice their expectations and demand better educational support for their children.
Regular meetings and discussions created a space where parents could share experiences, understand challenges faced by children, and learn together as a community. Many parents who initially felt disconnected from their child’s education gradually became more involved and confident in supporting learning at home.
Parents shared that children became more interested in studies when learning continued beyond school hours. They noticed improvements in reading habits, communication skills, confidence, and classroom participation. For many first-generation learner families, the fellowship became an opportunity to learn alongside their children and become more aware of their role in shaping their future.
At Ouvai Foundation, we believe lasting educational change happens when families become active participants in learning. Through the Parent Fellowship Program, we continue to encourage parents to become informed, involved, and empowered contributors in their children’s educational journey.
